Your car keys are more than just a way to start your engine – they are the gateway to your vehicle’s security. Many of us often hand them over without a second thought on what could happen, but in today’s world, a little extra caution can go a long way towards preventing theft, loss or unexpected insurance issues.
According to a report by TopAuto, between October and December 2024, there were 7 791 reported cases of motor vehicle and motorcycle theft, averaging approximately 85 vehicles stolen per day.
Here are some scenarios to consider, to be more mindful of where you put your keys to keep your vehicle safe.
Car wash caution: Who has got your keys?
A quick trip to the car wash is a weekly routine for many of us, but do you ever think about what happens to your keys while your car is being cleaned? Handing them over without knowing where they are being stored can leave your vehicle vulnerable to theft. It is your responsibility to prioritise the safety of your vehicle. Keep in mind that criminals may attempt to claim your keys without your knowledge by pretending to know you, or to work for the car wash you are leaving your vehicle at. It’s always best to choose a reputable car wash with clear security measures and protocols in place.
Cross-province transport: Know the fine print
If you’re moving your car across provinces on a transport truck, you might assume the logistics company’s insurance has you covered. But what if there’s a serious accident or your car is damaged in transit? It’s best to always notify your adviser before your car is transported, to ensure there are no gaps in coverage that could leave you out of pocket. Before you let your car go, confirm whether your vehicle is covered for transportation across the country. Once your car is in its new location, don’t forget to specify its new risk address.
Airport parking: More than just a space
Leaving your car at the airport for a period of time is convenient, but if your arrangement involves handing over the keys for valet or repositioning services, there’s a risk of damage or even theft. Before you travel, speak to your adviser to make sure you’re covered for any unexpected incidents, and to ensure you have comprehensive cover in place.
Handing over the keys after a night out
A designated driver using your car is a great idea, but only if you have comprehensive cover. Many comprehensive policies cover additional licensed drivers, but it’s always worth confirming. Better yet, check with your adviser if your policy offers safe ride services so you can get home responsibly. Remember, if you get behind the wheel after drinking and are involved in an accident, your claim could be denied due to intoxication, so don’t take the risk.
Key cover: The price of losing your keys
Lost keys are more than an inconvenience – they can be an expensive problem too. Modern car keys come with advanced technology, making replacements costly. Some insurance policies offer all risks cover, which can help cover the cost of replacing lost or stolen keys, so ensure that you have this coverage to save you from an unexpected financial hit.
Your car’s security starts with how you handle your keys. By taking simple precautions and ensuring you have the right insurance coverage, you can avoid unnecessary risks and financial setbacks. Not sure if you’re fully covered? Speak to your adviser to stay one step ahead.
